The court may also allow you to choose your guardian ad litem. If both parents can agree on a guardian ad litem, it provides some control. A guardian ad litem gathers information for the court including:

- The living arrangements of each parent
- Whether either parent has a substance abuse problem
- Whether there are is any mental illness on the part of either parent
